For more of a glimpse inside the mind of John Chambers, here’s a story by Brian Womack of the Investor’s Business Daily. Womack draws a picture of a man who overcame the drawbacks of his dyslexia to find success as a salesman at IBM and then later at Wang Laboratories, before scaling up the ranks at Cisco.
You may have known all that already, but were you aware that Chambers ended up in technology after a friend bribed him with tickets to a basketball game if he showed up for an interview at Big Blue, or that he graduated from Indiana University with a degree in jurisprudence. I never heard of jurisprudence either. According to Wikipedia:
Jurisprudence it is the theory and philosophy of law. Scholars of jurisprudence, or legal philosophers, hope to obtain a deeper understanding of the nature of law, of legal reasoning, legal systems and of legal institutions.
Guess that is kind of a useful knowledge for a CEO to have.
