Some more interesting snippets have emerged from Cisco’s Emerging Technoologies Group, which Network World’s Jim Duffy reported last week is charged with incubating potential opportunities and germinating them into Cisco’s next $1 billion business.
In his blog, Peter Christy, a principal at Internet Research Group, writes:
Cisco thinks they need to create 20 new businesses over the next three years to get the 16 successes they want for the $6.5B/year incremental revenue they’ll need in 2012 (with a big company like Cisco numbers get large quickly).
He adds that Cisco believes it can have a 75% success rate in those ventures and has a “reasonably elaborate internal Wiki system to generate a wealth of new ideas from across a broad Cisco population.”
Christy goes on to explain how these ideas progress into a product release.
He concludes:
Historically internal venturing has been problematic just because big companies don’t understand what they don’t understand, but maybe Cisco does.
