Microsoft is building yet another data center where it hopes to model the latest in green technologies. The facility’s first phase is expected to open in July, 2008 and help it house its planned long list of services from its “software plus services” initiative. This would likely include many yet-to-be invented Windows Live offerings.
The San Antonio site won’t be the largest data center that Microsoft will eventually own, according to InfoWorld. In fact, it will be a relatively tiny compared to the giant building now under construction in Quincy, Wash. The San Antonio site is expected to be one-third as big, the story reports. The Quincy center is known for its declaration to become nearly “carbon neutral” meaning it won’t add more carbon to the environment than it will use itself. Instead the site will rely on environmentally friendlier options like hydroelectricity and biodiesel. Read more.
