There are just waay too many snarky comments I could make here. However, since we are all adults, I’ll pass.
However, it is nice to see the government of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Deval Patrick, Governor, finally take charge of the impending morass they would have been subjected to if they had abided by the incredibly bizarre proclamation by Eric Kriss of the selection of ODF as the de facto standard for government documents.
Nearly two years later, the new government of the Commonwealth finally did The Right Thing, adding Microsoft’s Office Open XML (OOXML) specification as an official document format for governmental agencies. Showing by so doing that getting it right is better than staying the course, leastways that of Kriss’ strange jihad.
It is unfortunate, though, that they couldn’t go back all the way and un-ring the bell by dropping the ODF format entirely.
With the format losing traction, I strongly advise IT managers to look a lot more closely at the suppossed benefits of this dog (ODF), and ask themselves why they should plunge in when governments, who spend our taxed hard-earned willy-nilly, pass on swigging more from the ODF kool-aid jug.
I’m still hopeful……
