Cisco is discussing with the Shanghai government in China plans to set up a wireless broadband network called Mega City in time for the 2010 World Expo.
Sina English quotes Charlie giancarlo, Cisco’s chief development officer as saying: “Our vision of Mega City is a wireless (connected) and green city, and we will construct the network’s infrastructure for the project.”
Mega city is expected to support high-def video transfer and would connect government-authorized networks in areas such as traffic control, security monitoriing and environmental regulations, reports Sina English.
Shanghai will become one of six cities in China developing municipal wireless nets. Beijing is building a Wi-Fi- and WiMAX-based wireless network for next year’s Olympic Games.
Cisco has a R&D center in Shanghai and has invested $155 million in the country.
