Microsoft picked up two percentage points of the server market by units shipped last quarter, says Gartner, reports TheStreet.com. That gives it 67.1% of the market compared to Linux at 22.8%. IDC says that Windows gained 4 percentage points by revenue. Microsoft had 38.2% of the server revenue market, with Linux at 13.6%.
When Windows Server 2008 ships next year, analysts expect the market share to keep rolling in Microsoft’s direction, too. But the overall server market is growing, too – its up almost 19% percent. So there is plenty of money out there for Linux vendors. Right now, they are grabbing share away from traditional Unix players, rather than Windows.
