The kerfuffle over Windows Update updating itself is one of those issues that columnists and bloggers bereft of new ideas use as a crock to continue stoking the flames of customer discontent against Microsoft.
Guess what?
Microsoft deserves it!
Have you read the End User License Agreement? Have I? Has any normal human?
For goodness sakes, the EULA, while necessary was, without a doubt, composed, by lawyers for lawyers; to protect Microsoft’s rights, delineate obligations and responsibilities, and reduce the amount of awards when actions are brought against it.
Where is the consumer in all this?
Furthermore, the EULA is normally hidden away somewhere where all we want to do is get past it.
What should Microsoft do?
Simplify the EULA.
Break down the meat of the EULA into a maximum of 5 bullet points prominent on the install/initial startup of programs while referring to the verbiage located either the bulleted points or elsewhere.
Make the benefits (and disadvantages, if any)of the product evident so endusers can make up their minds whether to continue.
Windows Update, contrary to the wailings by the Cassandras, does need to update itself prior to updating the system upon which it is installed.
Is this clearly noted? No. I do not blame users inflamed by what they see as an unauthorized incursion into their system.
I blame Microsoft for not making the process clearer.
