The story says Cisco entered the HD videoconferencing business through its background in VoIP, and video was an extension of that. Cisco knew little about cameras and HDTV screens, and so designers attended trade shows and visited potential customers. The Cisco engineers also had to learn about the furniture and lighting businesses.
The designers Cisco gathered come from an impressive pedigree. Dave Mackie, principal engineer on the TelePresence project, previously worked for Apple on the software side, Michael Dhuey is the hardware designer of the iPod, Phil Graham, senior director of engineering for Cisco is an expert in streaming video having worked for Precept Software and Network Computing Devices, while the project’s director of engineering, Rich Wales, hails from Sun.
Since its launch, Cisco has demonstrated TelePresence to a host of people, including President Bush and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
