If you are debating when (if ever) to move to Windows 2008 take a look at this. Microsoft Certified Professional Magazine calls these items the most useful, yet overlooked, features. 1. The Print Management Console, for managing multiple printers 2. The Auditpol logging tool for creating auditing policies 3. Windows Remote Shell, replaces Terminal Services and can securely connect to multiple computers at once 4. Event forwarding for Vista desktops which will automatically forward desktop errors and other reports to the management console 5. Active Directory Rights Management Services, the revised version of the former add-on product, Windows Rights Management Services. (Got questions on this, shoot them to Microsoft blogger Tyson Kopczynski ) 6. Role-based password policies that gets rid of the restriction of one password policy per domain. (Kopczynski can answer questions on this as well.) 7. Group Policy search that eases finding and managing group policies 8. Group Policy comments, for adding comments to the settings 9. Advanced deployment technologies – of the mysterious sort. These have been hinted at by Microsoft but not yet explained. Perhaps the Vista Hardware Assessment Tool might be a clue. 10. Reworked network stack to reduce packet size and chatter and potentially increase performance of Windows 2008 over the wire. That’s the promise. But considering the last time Microsoft reworked their implementation of the stack was 1995, an overhaul seems like a good plan.
