Microsoft and Autodesk have lost an appeal on a patent-related lawsuit and have been ordered to pay damages of more than $140 million to Z4 Technologies, the Las Vegas Sun reports. Z4 claimed that Autodesk’s software, along with Microsoft’s Windows XP and Office 2003 infringed on its patented methods of requiring users to supply two authorization codes before they could fully use newly installed software. In an earlier trial, Z4 was awarded $115 million plus attorney fees of $25 million from Microsoft and $18 million from Autodesk. The appeals court upheld that award.
