Well, I’ve decided to pick on them again. Call it a love/hate relationship or something like that. Honestly, it’s not like I’m yearning to complain. But, sometimes I just need too. Anyhow, a couple months ago I posted an interesting scenario that I encountered with Office Genuine Advantage. Well, I’ve been having more fun with Genuine Advantage. This time I was moving some VMs around between machines. Upon booting my VMs back up, some would come up claiming that Windows must be activated, and some didn’t. This seemed kind of strange to me, so I decided to repeat the process. Again, in semi-random fashion, some machines would require reactivation.
Err… I suspect it’s because the hardware between the host machines is a bit different. But, I’m not really sure, and I haven’t had the time to really troubleshoot why it was random. What was really frustrating was that these machines were already activated, and because the keys were already used (being they were not VLKs), I now had to call into Microsoft. Or just play the VMDK shuffle until all of the VMs copied over fine. I played the VMDK shuffle…
Oh, Microsoft… you make it so much fun sometimes. Despite your claims of “Learning and Improving“, I still think that you have a long way to go with WGA. In fact, I think that WGA really isn’t the path towards solving your issues with software piracy. Then again… wasn’t it the openness of Windows (ease of use) that made it the dominate OS? And, thus the more hoops you add the more people will decline to use. Just look at Vista, the red headed step child soon to be deemed “Vista Me”.
