If you’ve ever spent any time wandering through CodePlex, Microsoft’s Web site for all of its “open source” projects, you know that it’s easy to find interesting projects. But you’ll also know that it’s fairly hard to find all the ones you would actually use. Click on the keyword “Sharepoint” for instance, and you’ll find 124 projects. Cool, but yikes.
However, there’s a shorter list of the more interesting SharePoint Codeplex projects sent to you courtesy of the Shared Points blog, written by the Microsoft Consulting Services Norway Information Worker (IW) team. This blog’s recommended freebie SharePoint add-ons include:
Applications templates and role-based templates
Community Kit for SharePoint (also recommended by Microsoft Subnet blogger Chris Dalby)
And Faceted search
The bloggers also point out the list of governance-related tools, though that points to another list of several dozen projects.

While wandering around CodePlex researching SharePoint for this blog post I also stumbled on a couple of Vista projects that sound worthwhile (though haven’t tried them yet).
Vista/XP Virtual Desktop Manager
“You can have as many desktops as you want and can seamlessly switch between them,” the project’s developers promise.
A program that purports to save up to 70% of your battery by disabling those “nice, but greedy Vista features,” its developers promise.
