Cisco gaining ground in Juniper’s core routing market?

Analysis
Dec 4, 20072 mins

The market maybe eager to see what Juniper’s expected launch next month of its first enterprise switch will do to Cisco’s bread-and-butter market, but in Juniper’s carrier territory, Cisco has apparently fought back some market share against its arch-rival, according to LightReading.

In recent days, Cisco has announced wins for its CRS-1 core router to XO Communications and Savvis.

XO is using the CRS-1 for its core-backbone upgrade in nine U.S. locations, reports LightReading. The carrier has been using Juniper in the core since 2001, and the new Cisco routers will work alongside the Juniper gear.

According to LightReading:

Considerations included total cost of ownership and some marketing support from Cisco related to XO’s enterprise business — meaning, for example, that Cisco and XO will collaborate in some promotion and training efforts, MacNeil says.

Savvis, on the other hand, inherited a Juniper-based backbone after its acquisition of Cable & Wireless assets, reports LightReading, but decided 18 months ago to go with Cisco.

LightReading adds:

Cisco says it’s got a 61.9 percent market share in core routers, but figures from the Dell’Oro Group put Cisco’s share at 56 percent at the end of September, up from 55 percent the previous quarter.
