Last night, I took a shuttle from the Google space port to the Google Space Station for a smashing holiday party. I really found it amazing that they were able to construct this massive structure without anyone finding out. Don’t believe me… here is the proof:
It was a blast, but maybe a little lacking from previous years. On another note, you may find it strange that I’m posting my Google experiences on a Microsoft subnet. But, then again I live within the “valley of the processor” which means that boundaries between techies tend to be small. After all, I have friends that work for MS, Google, eBay, Apple, Yahoo, and so on.
What is my point, well… the reason while I’m blogging this afternoon is to share something really cool. Earlier this week, Google, UNICEF, and OLPC launched Our Stories. Similar to StoryCorps, which is designed to so that people can share their stories, Our Stories is designed so that children from around the world can interview, record, and “share the stories of their parents, grandparents, and others in their families and communities.”
How is this done? Well… “Students using One Laptop per Child (OLPC) computers have a built-in recording and sharing feature on their laptops that are designed to work with this project.” In other words, not only are the OLPC’s being put to use. They are being put to use for something that is really cool, the recording, capturing, and organization (via Google) of oral stories and traditions from many different societies. Let’s think about this for a second, can someone say historian, sociologist, and anthropologist dream. Way to go guys!
