Unstrung – the news Web site that was the first to publish speculation that Cisco was eyeing up WiMAX base station vendor Navini for purchase – is now reporting that Cisco is working with one North American and one international Tier-1 operator to test a “network delivery system that can push applications and content over ‘any network’ to ‘any device’ – wired or wireless.” Details are sparse as to what the technology involves and who the partners are, but Unstrung reports that the system is “intended to deliver content across cable/DSL, 2G and 3G cellular, and WiMAX networks.”
According to Unstrung, the platform was designed with expertise from Scientific-Atlanta.
The news site also reports that Cisco views WiMAX and the alternative Long Term Evolution (LTE) technologies for 4G as “complementary” and that Cisco is keeping a close eye on the femtocell market.
