There are a lot of things that can derail your success in an exam. A lot of them you can prepare for but there are going to be times when all of you preparations fail and things just go poorly for you. In other words, you are a victim of bad luck.
It happens to all of us all the time. Last week, I wasn’t able to write a second column. I had it all planned. I just needed to sit down and write it on Thursday. I had planned the subject and the time was mentally put aside. What happened? I got sick. I was a little under the weather when I started class in the morning and by the time I was done and ready to go home, I was feeling worse. When I got home and was turning on the laptop to sign in, I had a fever and was having trouble thinking straight. From that point on, all weekend, I was pretty useless both mentally and physically. Nothing I could do…just bad luck.
There was one time I was taking an exam and the first 6 or so questions were on my worst subject. Just bad luck I guess. That has happened to a lot of students of mine too. They start off with shaky answers and it goes downhill. Just bad luck. You can’t do anything about it, it just happens that way.
So what do you do if you are a victim of bad luck? Take advantage of it. Try things you never would have. Guess if you have to. At least you are sitting through the exam and as long as you don’t give up, you will still reap the benefit of having experienced the exam and some live questions. Nowadays, Microsoft let’s you try for their “second chance” (click here to learn more if you have never heard of this) so even if you fail, you can try again.
I think bad luck is only bad if you stop trying….keep fighting for every last answer and it may turn out to be good luck!
