The Think Next blog has been doing its best to show off Windows 7. There is no confirmation that these screen shots are really and truly the Windows 7 Milestone 1 release, (or, if they are — as some have accused — just Vista dressed up with a Windows 7 logo). But many folks have noted that they do appear to be real.
Real or not? Doesn’t matter. “Windows 7” spotting is just good plain fun. The blog has also posted a video of Windows 7 (although the quality is blurry).
If these screen shots are for real, what we can see is that Windows 7, on the surface, seems to be same-old/same-old — a giant, fat program that performs so many tasks and bundles in so many apps, that the term “operating system” seems ridiculous. Microsoft is under attack with disruptive technologies such as the open-source desktop operating system and Web 2.0/browser based PCs. But it looks as if it cannot think outside the box (or should we say, outside the Window?) when it comes to evolving its own technology. “More is better” has been the Microsoft mantra. This has served it well in the past but may not be the best choice for the future.
