Internet2 revamping its backbone

Internet2’s head honcho said today that the advanced networking consortium is phasing out its 7-year-old Abilene network and replacing it with a backbone supporting 10 10Gbps lambdas initially and 80 eventually. The word is that Internet2 isn’t renewing its contract with Qwest, but isn’t saying yet who the new carrier is.

 “The new network will allow Internet2 to “focus on the trains, not the tracks,” says Internet2 CEO Doug Van Houweling. Read more here on Internet2’s plans.
