From AP via Yahoo! News: “By routing signals from helmet-mounted cameras, sonar and other equipment through the tongue to the brain, [the researchers] hope to give elite soldiers superhuman senses similar to owls, snakes and fish.” Hyperbole aside (“superhuman sense” … sheesh!) the story is really interesting. The article discusses divers using the interface to “read” compass bearings and “see” objects. It also briefly discusses the system as augmentation of the blind or partially sighted. Makes me salivate just thinking about it …
