After six years of heavy breathing from pornography opponents and other parties out to turn a buck, ICANN yesterday voted to reject a .XXX domain for the adult entertainment industry.
According to this IDG News Service account, a fear of having to enforce all of the world’s varied porn laws tipped the scales toward rejection.
This was always a bad idea for a variety of good reasons. But I don’t know which was sillier: the notion that a .XXX domain would induce porn purveyors to become better ‘Net citizens, or the idea that such a domain would somehow lead to more online porn.
