UC Berkeley has secured some more friends to join its Internet laboratory.
IBM, HP, NTT Multimedia Communications Laboratories, Nortel and Oracle have signed on as affiliate members, of the university’s Reliable, Adaptive and Distributed systems lab, or RAD Lab. Each vendor has pledged annual contributions of up to $170,000 for the next five years.
RAD Lab was launched last December with initial vendor members Google, Sun and Microsoft. Its aim is to help entrepreneurs and inventors bring a new wave of Internet technologies to the public, partly by exploiting newer, faster ways of developing software (read the story here).
All software and applications emerging from the lab will be made freely and openly available to the public, with source codes distributed using the Berkeley Software Distribution license, says Berkeley.
