Why not call it Google One-Click?

Oh, right, already taken. But that’s not stopping Google from charging headlong into its latest side venture, this one dubbed Google Checkout, a service that will aim to speed the online buying process, in particular on sites that advertise with Google.

“The goal here is to make it be one nanosecond from the time the customer decides to buy to the time the transaction is complete and the product is on the way,” Google CEO Eric Schmidt tells the New York Times.

Of course, Google isn’t the first company to attack this challenge — in fact, they’re not the tenth or the one-hundredth.

However, the search-engine giant says it’s going to elbow its way into this market the old-fashioned way: by undercutting prices.

And they’ve got the loot to do an awful lot of undercutting.
