Intel held its fourth annual Research Day at Intel earlier this month to showcase a range of projects it is running with a host of universities. The projects span mobile technology, enterprise computing, large-scale computing platforms and “people-centered” computing and are being developed under Intel’s current mantra of “driving energy efficiency and performance.”

Many of the projects have been running for a few years but none of the researchers I spoke with would say whether any of their work would end up on the market. They first have to sell the idea to the business folks at Intel who decide whether there is a market for it. So it was no surprise that the reseachers I met were very happy and open to talk about their ideas – the more publicity they gain, the more chance that their work would be picked up by the Intel execs?
As well as internal labs, Intel also sponsors research labs located near major universities, examing ways to harness technology to improve lives in developing countries, aid social interactions and improve businesses. It has labs near UC Berkeley, Cambridge University, Carniege Mellon University and the University of Washington. Read all about the labs and what they’re working on here.
