A researcher at the Institute for Complex Scientific Software at Northeastern University in Boston has snagged a $200,000 grant to study the Rubik’s Cube.
Gene Cooperman, a director at the university’s lab is studying the cube “as a way of setting up machines to study combinational problems in science and operations research,” says a story in Computerworld.
The article attributes Cooperman as saying that the research “could be applied to operations research problems with business applications, such as determining the most efficient way to move goods to consumers.”
The grant is provided by the National Science Foundation to fund the storage capacity required for the work.
