BBN Technologies, an advanced technologies firm has won a $5.5 million grant to create an artificial intelligence system capable learning plans or processes after being shown a single example.
The grant, awarded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), will fund the first phase of the four-year Integrated Learning Program.
According to BBN: “The goal of the project is to combine specialized domain knowledge with common sense knowledge to create a reasoning system that learns as well as a person and can be applied to a variety of complex tasks.”
The first phase of the research will focus on military medical logistics planning to simulate the requirements associated with planning the evacuation of wounded military personnel and civilians from Fallujah to hospitals in Germany and Kuwait. The results could lead to other automated systems capable of learning other tasks of similar complexity, says BBN.
