Members of the BuzzBlog Brigade were asked to weigh in on the notion of private property owners being required by regulation or law to secure their wireless networks. Here’s what Bill Davies had to say:
The first thought that comes to mind is why are they bothering? If a property owner’s wireless access point is not secured it would have no effect on other residents in the complex that I can think of other than allowing the unscrupulous ones to use it for free.
This seems to fall under the category of protecting people from themselves, a trend that is getting all too prevalent in our society. So, I guess, unless it can be shown that failing to secure your wireless access point causes harm to others, compelling people to implement security is a bad idea.
