Mandated security: No ‘compelling reason’

Members of the BuzzBlog Brigade were asked to weigh in on the notion of private property owners being required by regulation or law to secure their wireless networks. Here’s what Mariano Reyes had to say:

I can’t think of a single compelling reason why an ownership association should require safe wireless.  What is their vested interest? I know it’s all the rage now for people to give up freedom over their lives and property to condo associations for the sake of “protecting property values,” which just goes to show how much we really value freedom as a nation. But even if you subscribe to this notion, it’s not clear how having a neighbor with unsecured wireless access will affect your property value.

Maybe they’re just thinking ahead of the curve, and living in a “hacker safe,” bot-free neighborhood WILL improve your property value.
