Backspin This Week: SOA or a kit car? Am I nuts?

This week in Backspin I ask “why are you not more suspicious about service-oriented architectures (SOA)?” and compare the decision making process to building or buying a car. The thing is I’m not convinced that such a rapid move towards SOA is a good idea …

Now, let’s be clear; I’m not weirdly anti-SOA. SOA is a terrific concept but it ain’t perfect and it ain’t a slam dunk to get serious SOA systems up and running. I think SOA is another over-hyped architecture that will ultimately prove to be hugely useful and effective but not a panacea to all of IT’s business process implmentation problems. The difference between SOA and other achitectures de jour is that SOA is being bought into like there’s no tomorrow and that’s what I don’t get … why the reckless enthusiasm?
