By at least one measure — the hosting of domain names — the United States continues to kick sand in the faces of 98-pound weakling countries.
In fact, according to statistics service provider Ipwalk, fully two-thirds of domain names — encompassing .com, .net, .org, .info and .biz — have their virtual feet planted firmly on U.S. soil. That’s about 52 million out of 77 million, if you’re keeping score at home.
Pop quiz: Who can name the country that hosts the second most domain names? (Answer below.) This isn’t a clue, but it’s worth noting that the U.S. hosts 12 times as many names as does No 2.
According to Ipwalk: “A contributing factor to the strong US dominance could be that the country’s Web hosting industry is both market leading and very competitive on price, with the result that a large number of foreign companies and persons have chosen the United States for their Internet presence.”
