Spammers may be evil, but they’re not stupid. Well, most of them aren’t.

Clearswift’s latest spam analysis report is out and says spammers jumped on the red-hot iPod bandwagon for the holiday season. “News of stock running out in December coincided with the flood of e-mails claiming to sell limited edition or heavily discounted iPods. Some e-mails even offer them for free in suspicious-looking competitions,” the security company noted.

With the wave of publicity surrounding the newly announced mini Mac and iPod Shuffle, the company predicts they’ll be hot spam subjects in the coming months.

For December 2004, the spam category breakdown is as follows: healthcare – 43%; direct products – 23%; finance – 15%; pornography – 10%; other – 3%; phishing – 2%; gambling – .74%; and spam related – .29%.
