Been hit with a pop-up lately? You may have noticed that big-time, major companies are showing up in your face.
Are companies like Vonage, Sprint, Visa, Sony, Mercedes-Benz and others simply turning a blind eye to the way they do business online?
It depends whom you ask.
According to USA Today, which looks at big companies and adware: “Big-time online advertising is built on layers: A big advertiser, such as a Fortune 500 company, directs an agency to handle a campaign. The agency then farms that message out to specialists in various media, which can include spyware and adware purveyors.”
New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, who recently won millions in a suit against an adware/spyware company, says he doesn’t care. Spitzer has vowed to go after companies whose ads wind up as adware.
