The vendor’s monthly Spam Index shows that hardcore porn now represents only 5% of inbox content, as opposed to 20% when it began tracking such stats two years ago.
“Perhaps it’s no surprise that porn’s on the wane,” said Alyn Hockey, Clearswift director of Research. “Even the most basic spam filters can pick up sexual images, but it’s far easier to disguise spam selling healthcare products as legitimate mail.”
While the amount of such graphic e-mail is dropping rapidly, its place as most popular spam content has been usurped by financial- and healthcare-related UBE.
Financial and health care junk mail accounted for a combined 39% of inbox e-mail in 2003 and now comprise a whopping 80%.
