Want to save money on gas? No, don’t get a hybrid. Get a scooter! The Associated Press reports that the popularity of scooters is “soaring” as the price of gas does the same. The two-wheel rides may not be for picking up chicks, but they do get up to 70 miles per gallon and cost far less than a trendy hybrid.
Naturally, the usefulness of a scooter as regular transportation depends on your commute and where you live. The heat in our gas-guzzling sedan far outweighs riding around on a scooter in sub-zero weather in January. Plus, riding a scooter on I-495 in the greater Boston area, even one that qualified for highway driving, is suicide. Morning and evening commutes on the road resemble NASCAR races, with drafting mandatory. We really don’t want to be on a scooter with any other vehicle six inches off our tail while doing 70-plus MPH.
