SF mayor: Free Wi-Fi is a ‘civil rights issue’

Are we in the United States entitled to life, liberty and free Wi-Fi?

Progressive San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom seems to think so and told the media yesterday: “It is to me a fundamental right to have access universally to information.”

Newsom is soliciting bids on a free Wi-Fi net for the city. The project got lots of press last week when Google entered the bidding fray.

The mayor hopes a free wireless network encompassing the city will bring the Internet to poorer citizens and bridge the digital divide.

“This is a civil rights issue as much as anything else,” Newsom said.
