And not Portland or Salem – the 700-mile free wireless hot spot is centered around the bustling metropolis of Hermiston. So while the hip denizens of San Francisco and Philly are battling carriers and providers to get their free nets up and running, the onion farmers of northern rural Oregon are surfing away.
The wireless net was built by entrepreneur Fred Ziari on his own dime to the tune of $5 million. Access is free to residents, but Ziari is making some money back from contracts with city and county agencies.
