High-def is awesome for us, but not so much for the ‘Net, say providers.
The explosion of streaming shows, movies, you name it via the Internet – especially high-def files – will tax it beyond its design. If consumers start regularly switching their TV viewing habits from TV to monitor, it could choke the ‘Net and make providers’ networks as oversubscribed as that Southwest flight from Dallas to Denver.
“The plain truth is that today’s access and backbone networks simply do not have the capacity to deliver all that customers expect,” says Tom Tauke, Verizon’s top lobbyist.
The solution? According to ISPs: Charge content providers more for those fat files.
