F. Scott Fitzgerald was right, the rich really are different from you and me.

The case of telecommunications entrepreneur Andreas Gerdes proved that when he moved to small-but-tony upstate Andes, N.Y. Unhappy with the local Margaretville Telephone Company’s network, quality and offerings, Gerdes simply decided to turn the entire rural town into a Wi-Fi hot spot and tell everyone about Skype.

Now town residents can surf the ‘Net wirelessly from just about anywhere free and bypass the local telecom concern.
