In a speech, RIAA President Cary Sherman has praised Sony for its handling of the whole DRM software debacle and said the music company behaved “responsibly” once its hidden rootkit – and the associated security vulnerabilities – were discovered.
“The problem with the Sony BMG situation is that the technology it used contained a security vulnerability of which it was unaware,” he said. “Sony BMG has apologized for its mistake, ceased manufacture of CDs with that technology, and pulled CDs with that technology from store shelves. It seems very responsible to me.”
Notice nowhere in there does Sherman say anything like, “But, you know, hiding a rootkit in a CD without alerting consumers is wrong.”
And to provide he’s totally not of this world, Sherman also “defended the high price of CDs, maintaining that the cost allowed record companies to invest in up-and-coming bands and better staff.”
