If you lose your cell phone in the next couple of years, no big deal – chip makers say you will be able to replace it on the cheap.

Reuters today says chip makers are quickly moving toward producing the $20 cell phone by 2007. Manufacturers say they could get handset prices down to as low as $10, but the quality would suffer.

“Low quality is not an option, but accepting fewer features is,” said Horst Pratsch, vice president for Entry Platforms at German chip maker Infineon.

That extra $10 must produce a lot of quality.
