A Chicago-area school district says it will hold teens accountable for what they write in blogs or post on social-network sites like the notorious MySpace.
High schoolers who participate in extracurricular activities will have to sign pledges that acknowledge evidence of “illegal or inappropriate” behavior posted on the Internet could be grounds for disciplinary action.
School officials say they won’t monitor student sites, but will check them out if they’re tipped off to a problem. While it’s admirable to teach youth that posting on the ‘Net is not to be taken lightly, why are schools only holding athletes and others in clubs accountable?
The decision has also stirred up, naturally, privacy concerns and civil rights arguments from those who say the district is overstepped its bounds.
