Dell is trying to take a page from the Apple book and open fabulously successful retail stores that attract fanatics who want to drop lots of cash.

Except, unlike Apple, you won’t actually be able to leave with a purchase at the Dell stores.

Two 3,000-square-foot stores will be the retail equivalent of fake dessert carts and will open this year at shopping malls in Dallas and West Nyack, N.Y. (Ed. – Not India? Oh, no wait. That’s where the store employees will come from.) But the stores will only stock models. If you want to buy you have to go online or call. Well, that’ll cut down on shoplifting…

“We’re adamant about staying true to the model. That’s very important to us,” Dell spokesman Venancio Figueroa said Wednesday. “We also know, given our track record with customers, that they actually prefer home delivery.”

Unless, of course, they go to your store.
