Well it is not like throwing up your hands and giving up but it sort of sounds like it. Russian cyber security outfit Kaspersky Labs told my colleague Tim Greene today that it would hold a press conference tomorrow in New York to announce that cybercriminals have the upper hand in the online world and that cooperative international policing is needed to protect honest users. “We don’t have the solutions,” says Natalya Kaspersky, CEO of the company. “We thought it was possible to anti-virus and that was adequate protection. That time is gone.” Kaspersky’s CTO Eugene Kaspersky says security software vendors are overwhelmed. Kaspersky dedicates 50 engineers to analyzing new malware samples and trying to find ways to block them, but with about 200 new samples per and growing, it’s an uphill fight, he says. Sounds pretty darned depressing if you ask me.
