Major League Eating (yes there is a major league for this, not sure what the minor leagues would be) has signed a deal with Spike TV to telecast four yak-fests, sorry I meant competitive-eating events this year, starting with the “St. Patrick’s Day Chowdown” in Savannah, Ga. on March 17. Now that event sounds a little gross – involving massive amounts of corned-beef and cabbage as well as beef tongue. Yum. I am Irish and can deal with corned beef occasionally but beef tongue? Anyway the other three events haven’t been determined yet. As I wrote about recently, the folks in Philadelphia with their chicken Wing Bowl event would love to get in on this calendar. You may recall, event organizers there were lamenting the lack of attention their Wing Bowl generated. And they may have a point in that the Wing Bowl is no small event – 25 contestants eating hundreds of pounds of Buffalo chicken wings in front of 20,000 paying onlookers. (Last year’s winner ate 173 wings in 30 minutes.)ESPN, Discovery Channel and MTV have shown other competitive eating events such as MLE’s Nathan’s Famous July 4th International Hot Dog Eating Championship, which ESPN has broadcast live from Coney Island in New York since 2004.
