If you know and engineer give him or her a hug this week as it is finally here:
National Engineers Week. The idea, according to organizers is to raise awareness of engineering’s benefit to society and to promote education in math, science, and technology. There are many celebrations planned anywhere large congregations if engineers are present – though it seems if you are truly looking for a celebration of engineers you should go to China where, according to a National Academy of Sciences study, it produced 500,000 engineers, while India produced 200,000 and the United States 70,000 in 2005. To celebrate National Engineers Week – and to highlight the role of women in engineering – the National Academy of Engineering has launched Ask an Engineer. Available through its EngineerGirl! Web site, Ask an Engineer provides the opportunity to e-mail questions about engineering-related topics and get answers from women engineers.
