What’s in Cisco AutoQoS

Kevin Wallace, a senior instructor with training company Thomson NETg, has an in-depth look at Cisco’s AutoQoS feature, which NETg experts describe as leveling the playing field between voice, data and video.

He writes: “While the AutoQoS feature often provides a great starting point for QoS configuration, this feature does have its downside. The downside is that it focuses on VoIP traffic, while many other types of traffic in today’s enterprise networks might require special QoS treatment.

“Fortunately, a second version of AutoQoS addresses this lack of flexibility. The second version of AutoQoS is called, ‘AutoQoS Enterprise.’ (NOTE: Some literature might refer to AutoQoS Enterprise as ‘AutoQoS for the Enterprise’). What distinguishes AutoQoS Enterprise from its predecessor, which is now called ‘AutoQoS VoIP’, is its ability to ‘learn’ network traffic patterns flowing across an interface, and then assign appropriate QoS mechanisms (e.g. bandwidth allocations, DSCP markings, policing, multilink PPP, and RTP header compression) for those various traffic types.”
