Dell has given a life-line to Windows XP saying that it will once again let consumer PC buyers choose between Microsoft’ s older OS and Windows Vista when they buy new equipment, according to a story by The Associated Press.
The news service reports that Dell stopped offering XP on most consumer hardware soon after Vista launched earlier this year, but on Dell’s IdeaStorm Web site, some 10,700 visitors voted that XP should be still be offered.
Michael Silver, research vice president at Gartner quoted in the AP piece says it’s odd because consumers usually want the latest and greatest on new PCs, while Michael Gartenberg, vice president and research director at JupiterResearch, who spent a very short stint as a Microsoft evangelist, told AP that cosumers want XP because it works with their existing gear and is good enough, even though Vista boasts a prettier user interface and stronger security.
why is Vista a tough sell?
