William Hurley, chief architect of open source at BMC Software reckons Microsoft “loves open source” and he even has seven reasons why he believes this to be true.
Among the reasons include the fact that Microsoft includes open source code in its products (“Have you forgotten the first TCP/IP implementation in Windows? It was based on open source code that Windows XP still contains remnants of.”); its support of open source vendors such as MySQL, SugarCRM and Jboss; it provides the source code to most of its Unix tools for Windows; and the “free press” it gets from its ‘battle’ with open source, says Hurley.
“Free press” does not necessarily equate to ‘good press’, though.
