Polycom yesterday slapped a patent infringement lawsuit on Codian, one of its smaller competitors in the multipoint control unit. The claim, filed in the Marshall, Texas federal court, says that Codian has infringed on five of Polycom’s patents (dealing with a range of video issues) in its MCU 4200 and MSE 8000 product lines. Polycom is seeking an injunction to stop Codian from using the infinged code and is looking for monetary damages. My $.02: If Polycom proves its case, it could spell the end for the smaller Codian, especially if it has to both stop selling products and pay damages. I wouldn’t be surprised if a settlement resulted in Codian being scooped up by Polycom, but that’s pure speculation on my part.
