No U.S. servers in China?

Someone forgot to tell U.S. Rep. Christopher Smith that Republicans are supposed to be the pro-business party that believes in hands-off governance.

The New Jersey Republican yesterday filed legislation that would toss technology company executives behind bars if they have the temerity to locate Web servers in countries such as China that restrict use of the Internet.

It’s a nutty bill that will never see the light of law.

As we’ve noted earlier here, there are smarter people taking more reasoned and practical approaches to the problem of how to help bring a free Internet to repressive countries.
