Paul Hoffman, director of the VPN Consortium and an IETF regular, passes along this link to a 30-minute documentary on the ARPAnet produced in 1972.
It’s an interesting trip down memory lane — grainy footage and all — including this passage from a speaker discussing an early take on the need for convergence.
“In my view the communication and computer people really haven’t yet begun a public dialog; they’re not yet speaking the same language. The thoughts of the communication people are still rooted in the technology of the telephone network. I think it’s necessary — very necessary — for the computer people to learn more about the problems of these networks so they can really join in this dialog and this way we can get the kind of data network that we need.”
